That Time I Lost a Battle with a Leaf: A Poison Ivy Tale

Poison-ivy-fishers-Indiana

It started as the perfect Saturday. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and I was feeling adventurous. I laced up my hiking boots, grabbed a water bottle, and headed out to explore a new trail just outside Carmel. There were wildflowers, a hidden creek, and even a turtle sighting. I was basically one with nature.

Fast forward to that evening: I’m on the couch, basking in the glow of my outdoor triumph, when I notice a little itch on my arm. No big deal. Probably a mosquito bite. But then it spreads. And itches more. And turns red. And bumpy. And angry.

Cue the panic-Googling: “rash after hiking,” “what does poison ivy look like,” “how long does poison ivy last,” “am I dying?”

But here’s where the story takes a turn for the better.

Because I’m a member of a Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice, I didn’t have to wait until Monday or sit in a crowded urgent care. I messaged my nurse practitioner through our secure app, uploaded a photo of the rash, and within 15 minutes, I was on a quick telemedicine visit. She confirmed it was poison ivy, gave me treatment advice, and sent in a prescription to my pharmacy. Crisis averted. Itchy dignity restored.

You pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited visits, same-day appointments, and easy access to care when you need it most (like when you accidentally hug a poison ivy plant).
