Does Diet Soda Affect Our Mood?

If you think you are making a healthier choice by switching from regular to diet soda, think again.  

Diet sodas contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener.  Studies show that aspartame can elevate levels of compounds in the brain which slow down the production and release of our mood stabilizing neurotransmitters.  It acts as a chemical stressor causing increased cortisol (stress hormone) and free radical production.  When these levels are high, our brain is more vulnerable to stress which causes bad effects on our psychological health.  Possible symptoms include headache, migraines, irritable moods, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. 

The best option — stay away from regular soda AND diet soda.  At the end of the day, water is best for hydration, health and mood.
