It is that time of year again, when we break out the “not so comfortable shoes” in the name of fashion and fresh pedicures!
Plantar Fasciitis is when the ligament that stretches from your heel to toe becomes inflamed. It can cause painful sensations like a bruised heel or a stabbing pain in your foot first thing in the morning.
Anyone can suffer from it, but here are the folks most at risk:
* You have high-arched feet or flat feet.
* You wear shoes that don’t support your feet (especially for a long time on a hard surface).
* You have a BMI >30. (70% of patients with plantar fasciitis have a high BMI.)
* You’re an athlete.
* You’re a runner or jumper.
* You work or exercise on a hard surface.
* You stand for prolonged periods of time.
* You exercise without stretching your calves.
What is the best way to prevent it?
The best way to prevent it is to wear supportive shoes. If you are at risk, you should avoid wearing very flat, unsupportive shoes or flip flops with minimal arch support. You should especially avoid if you are going to be walking long distances or standing for prolonged periods. Also, stretch your calves and achilles tendon regularly! The Achilles tendon attaches your heel to your calf muscle and if tight, can cause strain worsening foot pain.
