If you have spent any time on social media lately, you have likely seen “hacks” for your nervous system. From gargling water and humming to ice baths and specialized massages, the vagus nerve is being branded as the ultimate hidden switch for health.
But is there actual science behind the hype?
On a recent episode of the Science Friday podcast (March 11, 2026), host Flora Lichtman sat down with Dr. Kevin Tracey, a pioneering neurosurgeon and CEO of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, to separate fact from fiction.
The “Brakes” of Your Immune System
The vagus nerve is not just one simple cord; it is a complex network of two main nerves starting at the brainstem and traveling down through the neck to the abdomen. Inside these nerves are over 100,000 individual fibers, each carrying specific instructions between your brain and your organs, including your heart, lungs, and spleen.
Dr. Tracey’s groundbreaking research discovered what he calls the Inflammatory Reflex. Essentially, the vagus nerve acts like the brakes on a car. When your body is barreling down the hill with excessive inflammation, such as during a cytokine storm, the vagus nerve sends signals to tell the immune system to slow down.
The Science of the Reflex
Electrical signals travel from the brain down the vagus nerve. In the spleen, these electrical impulses are converted into chemical signals like acetylcholine. These chemicals then interact with white blood cells to stop the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Why TikTok Hacks Aren’t the Whole Story
Social media influencers often suggest that humming or deep breathing can reset your nervous system. Dr. Tracey notes that while these activities technically stimulate branches of the vagus nerve (such as those connected to your larynx or lungs), they are not specific or selective enough to treat clinical disease.
While a deep breath can certainly help you feel more relaxed and in the moment, medical-grade Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) uses implanted devices to target specific fibers. This technology is already FDA-approved to treat epilepsy and, more recently, has shown an 80% success rate in helping patients with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis who didn’t respond to traditional drugs.
